(Product out of stock. See the home page for the elliptical score summary table) The Smooth CE 3.0DS elliptical is Smooth's answer to all the ellipticals out there that have the entry level price of $1,000. You can buy cheaper but for a good quality elliptical for the home I would advise you don't go any lower because the elliptical just won't last.
This is a relatively new addition to the Smooth Fitness line up. So you'd expect it to have the latest console and other new technologies that now exist in the field of fitness equipment. Unfortunately as you can tell by my ratings, I thought it was ok but it could have been improved upon. I discuss all of this in detail below.

Smooth CE 3.0DS Elliptical
The console is a simple and functional one. As you can see by the picture on the right the readings are all in green with a dark background making them easy to see. They include everything you'd expect like calories burned, speed, program and intensity and more. Below in white writing are a list of all the programs available to you.
The blue area in the middle shows the level of resistance which will change depending on the program you're on or how hard you set the resistance. Below this are the buttons which clearly show what each of the do. Being an entry level the console doesn't have a fan, it doesn't have an ipod dock with speakers. It's pretty average and gives you what you need - 3 stars.
There are 15 programs for you to choose from and this does include the manual one where you change the resistance yourself. There are 6 preset programs where you change the intensity so if you're an advanced user already you might want to increase the level as your fitness improves. You may well be using these the most as they are easy to get into but hard to master, you'll enjoy them.
There are 4 heart rate control programs. These have you exercising to a percentage of your maximum heart rate. These can be very useful if used effectively, however they use the pulse grips to determine your heart rate. These kind of measuring devices for heart rate and not a chest strap are notoriously bad at detecting your true heart rate. This makes these 4 programs kind of not worth it unless you buy a heart rate chest strap.
A feature that has become popular on fitness equipment these days are programs available where you can devise your own routine. This one is no exception as you have 4 slots available to you so everyone in the family can have one. As your fitness improves you can make it harder, easier or as complicated as you want. As you can see for an entry level machine there isn't a problem with the programs as such so it gets 4 stars.
One of the best features of the Smooth CE 3.0DS elliptical and one I've not seen on any others is that it can turn into a stepper. If you watch the video on the right you can see it in action. Also a picture on the right shows a minor change you make to the elliptical that turns it into a stepper. Steppers are hard work and workout different parts of the leg compared to an elliptical and you get both here.
Another feature is actually the compact size. As you can see the flywheel is located between the pedals making it much shorter than other ellipticals. The length of the elliptical when it has been assembled is 57 inches. This is much shorter where you would typically see an average length of around 70 inches or higher. So if you haven't got much room in your home this would be ideal for you.
The unit weight is 140 lbs so it is a substantial machine. It's not a flimsy entry level elliptical you can get for say $750 downwards. The warranty itself which I go into in more detail below proves that. It ships directly from Smooth Fitness warehouse and would be with you in 3 to 5 days. There is a 60 day money back guarantee just in case you're not totally happy with your purchase. So you have nothing to lose.
Max user weight
The maximum user weight is 300 lbs or 136 kg. So this I only give 3 stars. The reason is you can get better if you're willing to pay more. However this is an entry level elliptical so 300 lbs is what you'd expect. Don't let that put you off. Unless you weigh close to that amount you should be fine. I would always accept 300 lbs or more. If it's lower then that would make me question the quality of the elliptical.
The warranty is lifetime for the frame and braking system, 3 years parts, and 2 years labor. I'm very impressed with this, to get 2 years of labor for what is essentially an entry level machine is a fitness equipment industry leader. None of the other $1000 ellipticals I've reviewed on this site have a better warranty.
At the time of writing this CE 3.0DS is $1,000.00. The value of this elliptical is ok, I was debating whether it should get a 4 or 3 stars. As I've mentioned before it's entry level and it's pretty good value. There are just some things you don't get, I would always pay just a bit more for an elliptical like $1200 and upwards for more features.
Although 70% is not all that good compared to other ratings on this site it actually compares very well with other $1000 ellipticals. The other ones are the Livestrong LS10.0E which gets 80%, the Sole E25 which gets 70% and the Lifecore LC985VGs which gets 63%. The reason they get lower marks than others is you get a much better elliptical at only a slightly higher price.
Now if you only have $1000 these ellipticals will serve you well. You'll improve your fitness, lose weight and get some toning and shape into your body. I suppose what makes this Smooth elliptical stand out from the other $1000 ones is the ability to change it into a stepper. If you enjoy using a stepper as well and like the different workout you get then this is ideal. You'll find it really works outs the calves, you won't be disappointed.
