The Lifecore VST-V4 is a very unique looking elliptical. It still has all the elements of an elliptical and you ride on it in the same way as any other elliptical. The flywheel is simply raised above the front end.
I've provided pictures of it in use on the right so you can see the pedals and handlebars are exactly where you'd in them on a normal elliptical. The warranty is ok and includes 1 years in home labor which is what all ellipticals should have at least in my opinion. The rest of my verdict is below.

Lifecore VST-V4 Elliptical
The console has a very large LCD display screen that tells you all your workout information. Like other Lifecore consoles changes are made using a dial. I think this is a very good design feature. The reason is you can easily make changes whether it's to go up one in resistance or several steps. You don't have to press an up button numerous times you just turn the dial.
On either side of the screen are visual representations of the preset programs. These show what you can expect the resistance to do as you use them, whether it's climb a hill or encounter a valley. The start and stop button are below the dial closest to you. This is it really for the console, it is very simple but I like the large LCD display and all the functions it displays - 4 stars.
The VST-V4 has plenty of workout programs that should keep you occupied and interested in your fitness regime. Lifecore are one of the best manufacturers when it comes to workout programs, they have thought of everything. Before you start using the programs I recommend you create a user profile. Here you press the reset button until the display goes to user profiles. You then select your gender, age, height and weight.
When you profile is set and you can create up to 4 different user profiles you then select a workout program. You choose from 5 categories which are manual, program, user, heart rate control and watt. You choose using the dial and if you want a manual then select that, start riding and change the resistance using the dial as you ride. This serves as the quick start.
There really are so many programs you're spoilt for choice. The target programs can be located through the manual category. This is where you specify a target time, distance or calorie count. You then ride and keep going until you've reached your desired objective. This is good for burning calories as you can specify the amount you want to burn and ride to that target.
The VST-V4 has 16 levels of resistance. These are controlled using the dial. Simply by turning the dial you can up or down the resistance multiple times depending on how far you turn the dial. When you select any of the preset programs these use the resistance and take you on a journey of hills nor valleys depending on what program you've chosen.
There is a fixed 24 inch stride. This is a long stride as all ellipticals should be and mimics running. However, there is none of the impact of running so you won't feel any stresses through your joints or suffer running injuries like shin splints. If you watch the video to your right you can see that when in use there is a very smooth ride motion that's gives an effective workout.
Having the flywheel located near the handlebars ensures that the upper body gets a good workout. Normally with the flywheel at the bottom front or back the handlebars are attached to the pedals. In this case when you use the handlebars it really makes a difference in contributing to the overall energy you're using to workout. It's an innovative design that works.
Max user weight
The maximum user weight is 325 lbs or 147 kg. As you approach a mid range elliptical like the VST-V4 then the maximum user weight becomes more respectable. You can get higher even at this price range but as I've said on other reviews as long as your elliptical is over 300 lbs then it can cater to almost everybody and you can be sure it's strong and sturdy.
The warranty for home use is 3 years parts and 1 year labor. This is about average for what you'd expect a warranty to be. But you can get better even at this price. The one year labor is important and saves the VST-V4 from getting a below average score. Many other ellipticals would have lifetime on the frame but this elliptical is built in a more complicated way.
At the time of writing the VST-V4 is $1,699.00. This is quite a lot for the elliptical you're getting but I thought with the fantastic range of programs you're getting meant it deserved an average 3 stars. This is taking into account what you'd find on other ellipticals at this price. So this is the average of what you'd expect if you spend this amount in my opinion.
The Lifecore VST-V4 is certainly a different looking elliptical. I liked the console, the dial is a great addition and I've never seen it before on another elliptical. It really makes changing and choosing settings very easy, even in the middle of a workout. The number and range of programs is excellent and they are based on your individual use profile.
A score of 70% is a good one. I liked it better than their sub $1,000 elliptical which scored only 63%. There re a few items that are average about the VST-V4 and the main ones are the warranty and the value. The warranty is important and I've seen better. The value is very important and I felt it was about average. Again reviews on the web are quite positive and people like Lifecore so the choice is ultimately yours.
